International Day of Action for Rivers

March 14, 2022

On 14 Marchzo marks the International Day of Action for Rivers with the aim of caring for and conserving one of the planet's main sources of clean water. A natural resource essential for life. This commemoration was born from the unanimous decision of representatives from 20 countries who met in 1997 in the city of Curitiba in Brazil to seek a solution to the problems caused by dams.

Rivers are freshwater streams that originate from rain, springs, snow and ice. They are spread all over the planet, with the Amazon being the longest river in the world.

In its interior inhabit a diversity of fauna and flora of great value. There are also many minerals that contribute to the perfect balance of these ecosystems.

There are eight main rivers in Spain: Miño, Ebro, Duero, Tajo, Júcar, Guadiana, Segura and Guadalquivir.

A tip to do your bit to avoid contributing to river pollution: Buy phosphate-free detergents and fertilisers. The phosphorus in these products is one of the main pollutants in rivers nationwide.
